On Friday, July 1, 2016, 6:30am, we set off for stage 2 of the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB). We started at a chilly walk through a forested trail and then a steep incline up into green pastures.
Finding water is never a problem with water troughs pouring ice cold snow melt along the way.
We continued our steep climb, giving us a beautiful view of the valley from which we came.
Remaining snow patches from winter are crossed with care.
Dorothee, Miranda, and the Canadian guys caught up to us, so it was time for a group photo! Since we are traveling the same route, we share quarters, meals, games, and conversations together.
We continue to climb towards Col du Bonhomme along a snowy valley, single file like ants on a white tablecloth.
Finally, we reach the Col at 2329m (7641 ft) and have a small lunch and a rest.
The next hour or so is shuffling carefully along a snowy path along side the mountain.
Our final height of stage 2 is Col de la Croix du Bonhomme at 2483m (8,146 ft).
Our snowy path ends at Refuge du Bonhomme de la Croix, a mountain hut run on solar energy and a constant stream of TMB hikers.
For 49€ you get a mattress to sleep on, dinner and breakfast, and a limited shower
The panoramic view is spectacular outside or from the inside Windows.
unique alpine flowers litter the grassy hills next to snowy blankets.
After checking in, getting stamps, and taking showers, we relax and reflect with beer. After a long hike, it's the best beverage one could hope for! 🍺😀
For dinner, we are grouped together by the language we speak. Our tables have 12 English speakers.
Our table included Dorothee and Miranda (who play a mean game of spoons), Kevin and his son (England), a lady from Amsterdam, and a family of super tall basketball players, the Quilty's.
The first course is a vegetable soup with bread. This is followed by Polenta and beef with gravy. I ate mine so fast, I forgot to take a picture.
